What is it?

The white, chalky build-up that may appear on your tile or water features is called calcium build-up, sometimes referred to as calcium "scaling." Scale is the build-up of mineral compounds that produces a solution that often builds up around surfaces in or around a water system. Calcium scaling results from high pH or alkalinity levels, causing the calcium carbonate to separate from the water and stick to areas like your pool tile. It's essential to keep in mind that your pH and alkalinity levels should not be basic or alkaline. Once your pH and alkalinity levels do become basic or alkaline, calcium scaling may start to take place on your pool tile. 

Is Calcium Damaging to My Pool?

Calcium build-up (or scaling) obviously isn't very appealing to the eye. Although there is no need to panic when you first see it appear, it is vital to catch it in the earlier stages as it eventually can cause damage the longer it's left.
